Kathleen Fox, PT, Clinic Director

kfox@hdphysicaltherapy.com

Kathleen is an avid swimmer who captained her swim team at Manhattan College, where she went for her undergraduate degree in education.  Kathleen then attended graduate school at New York University where she earned a bachelor's degree in physical therapy.  Upon graduation she went right to work at NYU's Rusk Institute, the nation's premiere rehabilitation hospital.  She honed her physical therapy skills during a five year stint rotating through patient rehab, acute care and outpatient rehab, eventually becoming senior therapist.  She also worked for several years in a sports physical therapy clinic and has extensive knowledge of sports rehabilitation. Kathleen is currently Clinic Director at H&D's 43rd Street office where she mentors the physical therapy staff and offers guidance on treatments and on therapist's continuing education.  She expects to complete a Certified Manual Therapist program studying with Stanley Paris, Ph.D., the president of the University of St. Augustine (Florida) and a renowned therapist specializing in arthritis, osteoporosis and disorders of the spine.  Kathleen has also become proficient in techniques developed by noted physical therapists Jenny McConnell (stabilizing taping) and Brian Mulligan (mobilizing stiff joints as the patient moves.) Kathleen summarizes her treatment philosophy as one of working to make her patients more independent.  "One of my goals with my patients is to educate them on their injuries, while we work together, so that they can take control over their recovery and prevent future injuries." Kathleen decided early on to pursue a career in physical therapy after being sidelined with chronic injuries as a result of playing several sports, including basketball, volleyball, softball and swimming.  Kathleen is still an athlete and enjoys running, swimming and skiing.  She and her husband, Sean, are raising  two sons, Sean Jr. and Brendan.  Both boys enjoy swimming and games that seem to require a lot of running, mostly by Mom, to keep them out of trouble.

Thomas Grunewald, PT

tgrunewald@ hdphysicaltherapy.com

If it isn't already, Tom's middle name should be "Movement." He spent 20 years performing modern dance pieces around the country, continued his study of movement with t'ai chi and founded Beth Israel Medical Center's t'ai chi program for seniors. "Movement should be filled with awareness and intention and, if possible, some joy and enthusiasm," Tom says. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in 1994 from Eastern Washington University in Spokane and moved to New York City to practice. He believes that patients who undertake a course of physical therapy are essentially taking a course in movement and in life. Tom has walked the walk by taking a spectrum of continuing education, in topics as diverse as osteopathy, manual therapy, motor learning, lumbar and pelvic stabilization and t'ai chi.
